ChangeUserPassword Step
Description:
Change User Password lets a FlowWright workflow change the password for a specified process user ID.
The Change User Password workflow step is used to change a user's password from within a FlowWright workflow.
The step supports:
- Identifying the user through a process user ID.
- Providing a password for the user.
- Changing the user's password during workflow processing.
- Continuing the workflow through the True return path.
- Using the False return path for an alternative workflow path or error handling.
Inputs
- Process User ID – The process user ID property identifies the user whose password to change.
- Password for the User – The Password for the user property specifies the password to be applied to the identified user.
Returns
- True – The True return path can be connected to the next workflow activity when the password-change operation succeeds.
- False – The False return path can be used for an alternative workflow path or error-handling logic when the password-change operation does not succeed.
Usage:
The Change User Password step is typically placed after a workflow identifies a user and determines that the user's password needs to be changed.
The workflow supplies the process user ID and the password to the step. The step then performs the password-change operation for the specified user.
A typical workflow pattern is:
Identify User → Change User Password → Continue Process
The step can then be used as part of workflows that:
- Change a user's password.
- Process password-reset requests.
- Perform administrative user-management activities.
- Continue processing after a successful password change.
- Route processing through the True or False return paths.

Typical Workflow Suggestions:
Process a Password Change Request
Use the step when a workflow receives a request to change a user's password.
Example:
Password Change Request → Validate Request → Change User Password → Continue Process
The process user ID and password can be supplied to the step after the request has been validated.
Perform an Administrative Password Change
Use the step as part of an administrative workflow that changes the password of an existing user.
Example:
Administrator Request → Identify User → Change User Password → Log Result
The workflow can identify the appropriate process user before invoking the password-change operation.
Change a Password During User Provisioning
Use the step when a larger user-management workflow needs to change a user's password as one of its activities.
Example:
User Provisioning → Change User Password → Configure User → Complete Process
You can place the step alongside other user-management activities.
Route Processing After a Password Change
Use the True and False return paths to control what happens after the password-change operation.
Example:
Change User Password → True: Continue / False: Handle Failure
The True path can continue the workflow, while the False path can be connected to an appropriate alternative or error-handling activity.
Complete Password Management Processing
Use the step as part of a workflow that performs a sequence of user-management operations.
Example:
Validate User → Change User Password → Update User Information → Notify Administrator
You can perform the password change as one activity within the larger user-management process.
Example:
Let’s build and execute the “changeUserPasswordDef” example.
- Create a new definition named “changeUserPasswordDef” and open it in designer mode.
- Drag a “changeUserPassword” step to the canvas.
- Connect the dots between the “Start” and “changeUserPassword” step.
- Select the line between the steps to configure the “Connection Properties”. The default property values are “None, True, False, Error, and Evaluate”. Depending on the step’s purpose, you can configure additional values.
- Define a variable or a global to store the result.
- Click the "changeUserPassword" step to configure its "Required" properties. Provide a name for the step. Enter the user's GUID (copy and paste it from the User Management page). Enter the new password, which is encrypted when stored in the database. Click the Save button. Note: Click the "AI Predict" button for Copilot to add new process steps that match your process description.

- The “Logging” configuration is necessary for documentation and also measures workflow progress and percent complete. Configure the step state and percent fields individually, as shown below. Configure the “Logging” using the following properties.

- Save the Process Definition. Create a new process instance and execute it. When the workflow reaches the Change User Password step, FlowWright uses the configured process user ID and password to perform the operation. Continue the workflow using the appropriate return path.
Tips:
- Always provide a valid process user ID.
- Provide the password through an appropriate secure workflow mechanism.
- Avoid placing actual passwords directly into documentation, examples, or source-controlled process definitions.
- Use Variables or other workflow-generated values where appropriate for password values.
- Protect workflow definitions and execution logs from exposing password information.
- Validate the user before attempting the password change.
- Test the workflow using appropriate non-production credentials.
- Connect the True path to the next activity when the operation succeeds.
- Connect the False path to appropriate alternative or error-handling logic.
- Carefully verify the password-management workflow before deploying it to production.
- Do not assume additional password policies or validation rules from the step definition; the supplied XML does not expose separate properties for password complexity, expiration, or confirmation.
Definition Sample:
You may download the sample definition(s) from the link provided and later import them (drag-and-drop) into your FlowWright Process Definition (XML file) or Form Definition (HTML file) page.
Note: After the import, verify and complete any missing configurations, such as file path references and database connections. Then, save the definition to confirm the changes.
